  1. How much education is required to become a doctor of Chiropractic?
Four years of chiropractic college is required after completing specific, undergraduate requirements. The chiropractic college classes are very similar to medical school, however, the chiropractic student will spend more time on anatomy, nutrition and chiropractic technique where as the medical student will spend more time on pathology and pharmacology.

  2. What are the licensing requirements for a person to practice Chiropractic in the state of Ohio?
Completion/graduation from a nationally certified school of chiropractic. Pass Part I, II, III and IV chiropractic national board exams. Pass State Board exam.

  3. Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from a primary care doctor?
Very rarely but we can check on that for you.

  4. What is the most common cause of low back and neck pain?
The most common cause of low back or neck pain is a combination of having some areas too tight and stiff, while other areas are too weak. For example, your hips and pelvis may be too tight while your core abdominal muscles are too weak.

  5. What causes spinal or extremity joint fixation/dysfunction?
Loss of spinal or extremity joint mobility(joint dysfunction/fixation) can occur due to: 1. Macrotrauma such as a sport injury, work related injury or auto accident. 2. Microtrauma due to repetitive use, postural stress or poor ergonomics (work environment). An example of this would be carpal tunnel syndrome. 3. Emotional stress or mental abuse. 4. Chemical stress due to poor nutrition and diet.

  6. What is a chiropractic adjustment?
An adjustment is the primary method of treatment utilized by doctors of chiropractic. Chiropractic adjustments are performed on spinal and extremity joints that have been diagnosed as being hypomobile/fixated/dysfunctional. There are various adjustment techniques, but typically adjustments are applied by hand with a low force, controlled velocity contact on a specific joint or spinal segment.

  7. What is the purpose of an adjustment?
The adjustment helps to restore joint motion which reduces/inhibits pain, reduces/inhibits muscle spasm/tightness, reduces/inhibits joint inflammation and improves muscle balance.

  8. Does Chiropractic treatment hurt?
Chiropractic treatment, which includes adjustments and physiotherapy, such as electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound, rarely hurts and usually feels good. Some patients experience soreness at the beginning of care which usually quickly resolves.

  9. Will you keep my primary care physician informed of the care I receive from your office?
The doctors at Mt. Lookout routinely provide documentation to our patients’ primary care physician with permission from the patient. We also make a special effort to inform the medical doctor of any unusual condition or circumstance.

  10. Once I start chiropractic treatment, do I have to go forever?
    No.
First we will determine if chiropractic care can help you by taking a history, performing a physical examination and possibly x-rays. If we determine that chiropractic can be of benefit, then we will suggest an estimated, finite treatment period. If chiropractic care is not indicated, we will suggest other sources of help or refer you to another doctor. Every case is different and each person’s response varies.

  11. What techniques do the doctors at Mt. Lookout use?
We primarily use Motion Palpation analysis and Gonstead adjusting. We also use Cox Flexion distraction, Thompson drop technique and myofascial release/trigger point therapy and Graston Technique. We can also adjust extremities, i.e., the foot, knee, hip, wrist, shoulder and elbow.

  12. Can chiropractic help someone who has had back/neck surgery?
Chiropractic improves overall spinal function so it is often helpful for patients who have already had surgery. We treat many of these types of patients.

  13. Can children be helped with chiropractic treatment?
Oftentimes, chiropractic treatment is beneficial for children/infants as well as adults. Children usually require fewer treatments.

  14. Can chiropractic help children with ear infections? colic? asthma? bedwetting?
Oftentimes chiropractic adjustments have helped children with these types of problems although we do not claim to treat them directly. The primary goal of chiropractic for children and adults is to restore spinal and extremity joint function which enhances the body’s nervous and immune system.
